DROITWICH based cricketer Ashley Giles, and his wife Stine were the guests of honour at a charity night organised by Warwickshire County Cricket Club's director of cricket, Dougie Brown to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity.

The fundraising evening, which was held at Deedar Indian restaurant in Barnt Green, saw the former England cricketer and coach, along with former Birmingham City footballer Darren Purse who joined in with a short question and answer session after the dinner.

Stine Giles was treated for a brain tumour in December 2006, when she was 37. The tumour, which was the size of a cricket ball, was successfully removed and found to be benign, but Mr Giles has recently set out to raise money for the charity.

Mrs Giles said: “I am so grateful to Dougie for hosting such a great evening and help raise this money. Less than 2 per cent of research into cancer in the UK is directed to brain tumour research and so I feel it is really important to help raise funds to support such an important charity.”

The night also included a raffle and a short auction with prizes including a week’s holiday in France, an Aston Villa hospitality package, and a set of golf clubs.

Nearly £2,000 was raised during the course of the evening.
