AS increasing numbers of local people in crisis turn to foodbanks for help, shoppers in Droitwich Spa will be asked to donate food items to Droitwich Spa foodbank on Thursday, June 5 at Morrisons and Friday, June 6 at Waitrose.
The economic climate means more families are struggling to put food on the table and the foodbank needs more stock to meet demand for emergency food.
Droitwich Spa foodbank is preparing to open its doors at the beginning of July this year, and volunteers are collecting food in readiness to provide three days’ emergency food to men, women and children in crisis locally.
More than 90 per cent of the food given out by foodbanks is donated by the public. Supermarket collections are one of the main ways that the foodbank is stocked and the charity, run by Churches Together in Droitwich Spa and district, is asking people to give generously.
“The current economic climate means more and more people are struggling to put food on the table and we really need local people to give what they can,” said Graham Wilson, joint project leader for Droitwich Spa foodbank.
“Rising prices, static incomes and high unemployment are having a real impact on people on the breadline and we’re seeing more people turning to foodbanks for help. We want to make sure that no-one in Droitwich is forced to go hungry, but to do this we’re urgently asking for help.”
Droitwich Spa foodbank volunteers will be collecting at Morrisons on June 5 from 9am to 5pm, and again at Waitrose supermarket on June 6 June from 9am to 5pm.
Droitwich foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s UK Foodbank Network. The foodbank provides a minimum of three days’ emergency food to help people through short-term crisis. Each foodbank also signposts people to other local agencies able help resolve the underlying cause of the crisis.
Droitwich Spa foodbank is run by Churches Together has received support from Wychavon District Council, Droitwich Spa Area Partnership, Droitwich Spa Town Council, The Cinnamon Network and Festival Housing and other local community groups and individuals.
