DROITWICH MP Peter Luff has welcomed figures showing unemployment in mid Worcestershire has fallen since what he calls the ‘great recession’ of 2008.
The number of people claiming out of work benefits in the area has dropped from 1,543 in May 2010 to 849 in April 2014, a fall of nearly 45 per cent since the last general election.
Sir Peter said: “It is excellent news that more people are now in work in Droitwich and Evesham and across Mid Worcestershire. That means more people with the security of a regular pay packet to bring home to their families.
“The chancellor of the exchequer’s aim is to achieve full employment, so we are one step closer to meeting this target.
“These remain difficult times for families, who are still feeling the impact of the 2008 great recession, but these figures definitely give us cause for optimism.”
Figures account for people claiming out of work benefits, which don’t take into account the number of people in part-time work and zero hours contracts in the area.
