HIGH winds caused a large tree to fall on a medieval church near Droitwich Spa.

The tree, estimated to be around 80ft in height, was uprooted and came down on St Michael's Church, Salwarpe, on Wednesday.

The full extent of the damage to the Grade 2 listed building, which is part of the Parish of Salwarpe, Hindlip and Martin Hussingtree, will not be known until the tree is removed next week.

A spokesman for the church said: "The tree fell directly on the top edge of the roof. Part of it also broke off and is hanging down the other side of the church.

"There is dust and rubble inside the building but it is difficult to see what damage has been done. We will know more when the tree is moved."
