THREE hard-working young people from Droitwich Spa were amongst University of Worcester students to receive academic scholarships last week.

The £1,000 scholarships are awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and were presented to 98 students at two award ceremonies at the University of Worcester Arena, presided over by vice chancellor and chief executive, Professor David Green.

Ben Mallinson, 21, a third year computing student, was among the Droitwich-based students to receive a scholarship.

He said: “I was really happy to be awarded with a scholarship and receive some recognition for my hard work last year.

“This is by no means an individual award though, and I’d like to thank my fellow students, with whom I’ve worked over the past year.”

Social Welfare student Emily Dukes, who gave birth to her third child just five weeks before the start of the last academic year, also received a scholarship.

She said: “I wasn’t sure how I was going to get on last year after having a baby so close to the start of the first semester, but I’m really pleased with how everything has turned out.

Second year computing and business management student Peter Clews also received a scholarship, and says the award proves that his decision to leave employment and re-train was not a wasted one.

Professor Green said: "We were delighted to be able to award an academic scholarship to Ben, Emily, Peter and so many other students. The scholarships recognise terrific, high quality and extensive achievement, and it is only right that students who excel here at the University of Worcester are rewarded."
