Droitwich rail worker is final for fundraising award
10:40am Thursday 12th September 2013 in News
A RETAIL assistant from Droitwich Railway Station has reached the final of national awards for rail staff.
Sarah Hollies from Stourbridge has been named as a finalist in the David Maidment charity category of the national Rail Staff Awards.
Ms Hollies was nominated for work she has undertaken in her spare time to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Ms Hollies, a mum of two and grandmother of three, took part in a five-day 100km trek across the Sahara, co-ordinated a charity golf day, and organised a 60s and 70s themed disco in aid of the charity raising £4,100 altogether.
She said: “A friend and I wanted to support the charity because a colleague had suffered from breast cancer. Although I don’t have much free time and had never done anything like this before, I did it because I believed I could. I followed an intensive training programme before going to the Sahara and having fought off illness to complete that trek, I’ll be fundraising again next year with a walk from Petra in Jordan to the Dead Sea, this time for the Breast Cancer Campaign.”
