A DROITWICH Spa railway crossing is in need of urgent repair before someone is seriously hurt, according to nearby residents.

Mayor of Droitwich Spa, Councillor Anne Taft, has written to Network Rail to request maintenance work be carried out after having the issue highlighted by concerned people who regularly use Colford Crossing in the Chawson area of the town.

The crossing, which leads from Teesdale Close to Westbury Avenue, is surrounded by mud and uneven ground. The condition of the site apparently makes it dangerous for those who use it.

In her letter to Network Rail, Coun Taft, said: “This crossing is used on a daily basis by school children in term time to go and come back from school. It is in a terrible muddy mess and needs to have some kind of gutter put in to drain away the water. I understand that some gravel has been put down but this is not resolving the problem as it is sinking into the ground, making the groundwork very uneven.

“The state of the area is becoming a health and safety issue and I feel it is only a matter of time before we have a nasty accident occurring.”

Network Rail spokesman Chris Denham said: "Safety is a priority for Network Rail, and especially so at level crossings.

"No doubt after a hard winter the path will be muddy, but the most important aspect is that the crossing is used safely.

"We encourage all users of level crossings to stop, look and listen for trains and take care while on the crossing.

"We thank the mayor for bringing this to our attention."
