GOLFERS in Droitwich Spa have helped raise thousands of pounds to help transplant patients at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Members at Droitwich Golf Club, Ford Lane, have taken part in a number of fundraising activities and raised £6,570 that will be divided between the two causes.

Club captain John Whitehead said: “We’re thrilled to have raised so much money to help patients. Our fundraising was devoted to the transplant teams because we have a strong desire to help people with the care and support they receive before, during and after transplant surgery.

“We also wanted to raise awareness of organ donation and highlight the importance of research and development in this field. We know from personal experience how important transplant programmes are as my sister-in-law Beverley had two small intestine transplants.

“We want our donation to help provide people here with the type of care that Beverley valued so highly.”

Mike Hammond, chief executive of the transplant charity, thanked 2012 club captains, John and Linda Whitehead, at the captains’ election dinner. He said: “We are grateful to John, Linda and all the members of Droitwich Golf Club for their fantastic support of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity. It is because of the generosity of fundraisers and the expertise of the teams involved in the organ transplantation programme at the hospital that many patients do not just survive, but make a full and complete recovery.”
