Spa students offered prestigious university places

STUDENTS at Droitwich Spa High School and Sixth Form are celebrating after being offered prestigious places at top universities.
More than 100 youngsters from the Briar Mill school have applied for places through the UCAS system, bucking a national trend that has seen a reduction in the numbers of students applying to go to university since the introduction of tuition fees.
Many Spa students have already had attractive offers from their chosen universities, including three who have had offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Chris Rouse has an offer from Christ’s College Cambridge to study human, social and political sciences, Jack Solloway has an offer from Magdalen College Oxford to study English and Jamie Leurs has an offer from Worcester College Oxford to study history and economics.
Mr Rob Elmes, director of sixth form at Droitwich Spa High School, said: "We all know how ultra competitive it is to secure a place at Oxford and Cambridge so to have not one, but three of our students holding offers makes us extremely proud.
“This is testament not only to the hard work and determination of Chris, Jack and Jamie but also to the unstinting efforts made by their teachers. They are a credit to our sixth form."
Jack Solloway, who is also headboy, said: “It’s fantastic that so many of us have been given the opportunity to study at either Oxford or Cambridge. I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank the school for its support, in particular the English department, and I know this will continue over the next few months as we all work towards achieving the required grades.”
In addition to the three Oxbridge offers, a large number of students are receiving a steady stream of offers from a range of institutions across the country.
Headteacher Mrs Natalie Waters added: “Our A Level results last year, as well as our recent Ofsted report, show clearly that the sixth form here at Droitwich Spa offers students the very highest quality of education and preparation for higher education. I am so very pleased for the students and very proud of the staff who work so hard to prepare the students for these fantastic opportunities.”
