A MAJOR fundraising drive has now been launched to help build a new sports facility for the town.

Droitwich Spa Cricket Club and Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls Football Club, which are both based at St Peter’s Fields, off The Holloway, need to raise cash for a new £700,000 clubhouse and pavilion complex.

The scheme would see the current building, which is more than 40 years old, replaced with a modern, attractive and more secure multi-purpose facility.

The community sports clubs have now released images of what the site could look like and are aiming to gather the initial £8,000 needed to submit a application for full planning consent. If given, they could then apply to various sports and community agencies for funding support.

Chairman of the pavilion committee, James Cowlishaw, said: “We are now trying to raise the funds so we can submit for full planning consent. So far we have raised about £2,200 of the £8,000 we need for this stage.

“We will then be looking to raise more funds and get help for the scheme by applying for grants.”

It is hoped the new site would be open all year and would be available for use by wider community groups, as well as the 570 regular users from the two main clubs.

The Droitwich Sports Association, which represents both the cricket and football club, is now organising a host of activities and events in the coming months to help support the fundraising drive.
