REHEARSALS are entering their final phase as Astwood Bank Operatic Society (ABOS) prepare for their March production of Gilbert & Sullivan's penultimate collaboration - Utopia (Ltd).

Set on a Tropical Island, ABOS will be turning up the heat when they play Redditch's Palace Theatre - with Hakas, Hulas, sarongs and grass skirts.

A spokesman said: "And you need have no fear if you think Gilbert & Sullivan's is a little 'highbrow' these days.

"This less-well known show is more akin to Victorian Monty Python, with some very silly situations, witty dialogue, and tuneful music, all brought together in a very accessible production.

"If you've ever seen ABOS on stage before, you'll know you're in for a fun evening."

She added: "Utopia (Ltd) is a patriotic romp which both sends up and revels in Englishness/Britishness, with all its foibles - very timely while we try to rediscover our national identity in the lead-up to Brexit."

The amateur operatic society specialises in Gilbert and Sullivan and Victorian/Edwardian light opera/operetta, as well as making an occasional foray into musical comedy.

The aim of the society is to provide a social outlet for all ages, at the same time providing an opportunity for members to participate or perform to the best of their abilities.

This culminates in an annual production at the Redditch Palace Theatre, usually in March each year.

The spokesman added: "Although we are an amateur society, we endeavour to put on a professional quality production, and from our members we expect commitment, team work and enthusiasm.

"We are very involved with the local community, and we hope all our members will participate in our fund-raising events."

Utopia Ltd is at the Palace from March 8 to 11.
