THEATRE goers can take a trip down Fleet Street this weekend as the Palace Youth Theatre puts on its summer production – Sweeney Todd.

Visitors can follow the dark activities of the demon barber of Fleet Street and his accomplice Mrs Lovett in a special school edition adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s original score.

The Palace Youth Theatre have been running the annual summer school and for the past two weeks young performers have been rehearsing to put on a fantastic show.

An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife.

The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice.

Mrs Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun.

Lizzi Tabberer, Youth Theatre and Arts Officer for Redditch Borough Council, said: “We have an amazing cast for this show with extremely talented performers who have worked really hard over the past two weeks.

"Sondheim is well known for being very difficult and the school edition doesn’t make it any easier. The young people have taken on the challenge with no problems and we now have a fantastic show which will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”

There will be two showings of Sweeney Todd at the Palace Theatre this Saturday, August 13 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £12 (£10 discount or £35 family ticket) inclusive of booking fee of £1 per ticket up to a maximum of £4.

The show is suitable for children aged eight plus due to some content changes in the school edition.
