"BEING fabulous is not just for the rich and beautiful. It's a state of mind. It’s something we can all be," Writes Worcestershire journalist Suzanne Virdee.

In her new motivational book “A teenage girl’s guide to being Fabulous!” Virdee aims to inspire young girls to find and fulfil their dreams.

Although Virdee has no children of her own, she makes her intentions clear, explaining this is the advice she would have given her daughter from her own life experiences.

The book covers a large range of subjects which affect 21st century teenage girls and young women including sexism, rape, female genital mutilation, sex, grooming, sexting and sexually transmitted infections.

After covering one of these issues, she includes website links and phone numbers which readers can use to find out more or seek help and advice.

Born to a white English mother and an Indian father, Virdee, discusses how in some cultures it is undesirable to have a female child.

She explains how some girls are deprived education as their destination is marriage be it forced or arranged.

She is keen to point out how fortunate she is for growing up in a family that did not feel this way.

As a young woman, she set out to become a reporter, applying for almost 100 trainee positions, and after a heap of rejection letters she applied for a work experience placement at the Solihull Times.

They accepted and from there she got her first reporting job.

She also breaks down feminism for youngsters explaining that it isn’t about hating men but purely wanting equality.

Woven into the pages are inspirational quotes from powerful and intelligent women including American politician, diplomat, and activist Eleanor Roosevelt, Pakistani activist for female education Malala Yousafzai, celebrity talk show host Oprah Winfrey and American politician Hilary Clinton.

The overall message is to dream big and to work hard as this will lead to achievement and, of course, to never forget girls are just as good as boys.
