A GIANT cabbage - currently weighing in at more than 130lbs and potentially about to smash the world record, is heading to Worcestershire this weekend for display at the Malvern Autumn Show.

Champion giant vegetable grower, David Thomas of Cornwall, is bringing the cabbage to the show which is on tomorrow, Saturday, September 27, and Sunday, September 28.

Not only that, he is also bringing along a massive 1,200lb pumpkin, for entry into the UK National Giant Vegetables Championship.

He is hoping that his bumper cabbage will break a world record which has stood since 1988.

Fellow grower, Ian Neale from Newport, South Wales, is keeping his fingers crossed that his mammoth celery and carrot will both break world records too.

The UK National Giant Vegetables Championship, is Britain’s most prestigious vegetable growing competition, which had been held at the Royal Bath & West Showground in Shepton Mallet since 1997, and took up residence at Malvern for the first time last year.

It’s a welcome addition to the event’s now famous amateur growing exhibition on display to some 60,000 visitors, and brings new classes to the show’s giant vegetable section.

The giants arrived at Malvern today on the eve of the show, where they will be weighed in, courtesy of industrial strength scales.

Visitors to the giant vegetable section of the show are in for an added treat this year too as 3D giant pumpkin carver, Simon McMinnis from Poulton-le-Fylde, will be at Malvern over the weekend with a display of unique artistry to wow the crowds.

Simon is quickly making a name for himself as a pumpkin sculpting extraordinaire, and is a regular winner of the Wychwood Brewery’s ‘Art of Pumpkin Carving’ competition. He has been referred to as the UK’s answer to Ray Villafane and sculpts by hand.

The talented carver has created some brilliant masterpieces which have even included one of Jack Nicholson in the film ‘The Shining’.

The UK National Giant Vegetables Championship complements the show’s already famous amateur growing exhibition of fruits, vegetables and cut flowers, on display over the weekend.

The Malvern Autumn Show is a celebration of food, gardening and nostalgia, and boasts one of the largest gatherings of amateur growers in the country, and each year, takes delivery of some of the UK’s largest produce.

Open Gardening is just one of a whole host of features at the 2014 event, which includes a Good Life Pavilion with feature gardens and television gardeners Monty Don (Sunday only) and Joe Swift (all weekend) as guests.

Other attractions include a Vintage Village with free jive lessons, grow your own demonstrations, a Royal Horticultural Flower Show, a cookery theatre, an artisan food market, native livestock, country pursuits and crafts, family entertainment and around 600 quality trade stands offering retail therapy for all.
