Chance to get dogs chipped

DOG lovers can protect their pets by attending a council-led chipping service.
Wychavon District Council is urging townsfolk to take advantage of the scheme when experts visit Droitwich Spa on May 20.
Everyday, dogs end up in animal homes and face uncertain futures because there is no way to identify them and return them to their owners.
However, with a microchip fitted, if a dog is lost, stolen, or has run away, it can be easily identified by one of more than 3,000 scanners placed with rescue centres, vets, dog wardens and the police all over the country.
The microchip, which carries a unique identification number, is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the dog's skin, usually in the neck.
It is a simple procedure, just like having a normal injection, and once inserted the microchip cannot move about or be seen.

Pip Singleton, Wychavon's dog warden, said: "Many dogs are lost or stolen each year and this can be extremely stressful, both for the animal and its owner. Chipping a dog is the most effective and secure way of making sure it can be identified and returned home safely."
With the help of the Dogs Trust, a chipping event will be held at Droitwich's Community Contact Centre on Tuesday, May 20, from 10am-12noon.
The cost of having a dog chipped is £9.50, but the service is free to pensioners and those on means tested benefits.
Other chipping events will take place across the district over the spring and summer.
Each dog must be on a lead and have a handler present who is 16 years or older.
