book written by two Worcestershire speech and language therapists was published last week.
‘Teaching Children to Listen’, written by Liz Spooner and Jacqui Woodcock from Worcestershire Primary Care Trust, outlines a practical approach to improving children’s listening skills.
The book looks at why listening skills are important and how to overcome barriers to achieving them as well as the specific behaviours that children need to learn in order to be good listeners.
For the past three years Liz and Jacqui have been leading a Listening Project funded by Extended Services in schools in Worcestershire, working directly on listening skills with over 1,300 children. They both have many years of experience in running groups with children and in providing training workshops for their colleagues in education.
Their work was also recognised at Worcestershire PCT’s Long Service and Staff Achievement Awards last year, where they were presented with the Innovation Award for developing a new approach to teaching listening skills.
“The great thing about working on this project is that we have been able to see significant improvements in the children that we have worked with,” said Liz. “We have been lucky enough to work with some wonderful children and teachers in Worcestershire over the last three years and hope that our book will enable many other children to benefit from this approach."
